 A History of the Shibui Room . . .

When beauty reaches great subtlety, say the Japanese –
as in maple leaves breaching a bamboo fence, or rusty rivets in an old wooden door –
they call the effect shibui, meaning restrained elegance.

At a general meeting of the membership on April 26, 1971, Club members approved the name "Shibui" for the University Club's original dining room. This name had been suggested by Club member Ed Zabrusky. Inspired by the new name, Hideya and Lillian Kumata presented the Club with a gift of four original Japanese wood block prints. In 1973, Dr. Fred Siebert gave the Club six additional Japanese prints. The series of ten prints were displayed in the room for many years, and still grace several common areas of the Club.

As the Club's membership grew, the Shibui Room also became a favorite space for members to host private parties, small receptions, and meetings. The 2011 renovation of this room and the adjacent cocktail lounge have once again established this west room as the member's favorite dining space.

In Japanese, the word Shibui may be used in many ways to describe design in rooms, subtle beauty in furnishings or clothing, and even artful presentation of food. It connotes a warm aesthetic feeling of natural beauty, restrained pattern and color, and purity of form.

The unpretentious artistry of the concept is not dull, but interesting in its simplicity and creation of tranquility. In Japan, Shibui is considered the ultimate in taste – as is Mingle!
