The origins of the University Club are rooted in the State College Club, founded by Faculty members of Michigan State University in 1929. The Club has a long and distinguished History of serving the university. As the Club has grown, we have held true to our mission to enhance the professional and social interests of the university community in an atmosphere of quality hospitality, intellectual fellowship and family recreation. The University Club is a self-sustaining, not-for-profit, private membership organization governed by a Board of Directors elected from within the membership.
Do I have to be employed at MSU to be a member? Employment at MSU is not a prerequisite for membership. Club membership is open to any individual, whether affiliated with MSU, or a member of the community at large.

When was the original building constructed?
U-Club Opens in October, 1970 The original Clubhouse on Forest Road opened in October of 1970. Designed in the late 60's by the Lansing architectural firm of Warren-Holmes, the building had a distinctive "Arts & Crafts" feeling, complemented by subtle oriental details.
October 2001 - Executive Development Center Opens The groundbreaking ceremony for a substantial addition to the building, designed by Keystone Architects of Lansing, launched a new future for the University Club on January 13, 2000. October 2001 marked the Grand Opening of the Executive Development Complex. The main level of this stunning facility houses the James B. Henry Center for Executive Development of The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management, The Eli Broad College of Business, Michigan State University. The lower level contains the University Club's private membership Fitness Center & Spa, the pro shop and offices of the university's Forest Akers Golf Courses, and the Graduate School of Management's Weekend MBA and Executive Development Programs offices. The corporately managed Candlewood Suites Hotel completes the complex, which is almost 1/4 mile long. The University Club provides food and beverage services for the entire complex.

When did the various additions and renovations to the University Club occur?
Main Lobby - 1999: In the winter of 1999, a complete renovation of the upper level of the University Club completely transformed the Club Lobby, Dining Room, President's Room, and Shibui Room. The soft yellows and greens, coupled with the rich, light wood tones, created a fresh, elegant ambiance to welcome members and guests.
Club Lower Level - 2005: Several years later, in January 2005, a complete restoration of the Club's lower level was underway. The Michigan architectural design firm of Ford & Earl, retained for this project, elected to return to the club's original design in the selection of materials and finishes. Colors range from copper, deep bronze, and warm beige to earthy greens, enhanced by natural stone tile. Doors and cabinetry utilize a mellow "figured oak" which is consistent with the 1970 "Arts & Crafts" design of the building.
Restrooms, Locker Rooms - 2006: In the winter of 2006, the upper level restrooms were renovated, following a Ford & Earl design that complements the work begun on the lower level. At the same time, the exterior locker rooms serving the swimming pool area were completely redesigned and rebuilt - an extensive project that resulted in richly tiled rooms with more amenities, and spaces that provide additional privacy for dressing and showering.

Special Club events and formal functions such as wedding receptions may be dressier; summer/outdoor events and club family functions are more casual. Athletic clothing is appropriate only at the pool, tennis courts, outdoor dining areas, or in the Fitness Center & Spa areas of the main building.
